Studio Brief 1 - Layout design for a healthy baking book

  • When looking for inspiration for the design stages of the project, seeing different examples of baking guides helped to give an understanding of the styles and layouts used in this type of publication. As previously established, each book used imagery of the recipes on their covers, as a way to entice the viewer into looking through the book.

  • We also know that many of the baking guides sold in the market are made for the public, but in a way that is personal to the author. For example, this book shows the audience the background of the author and the recipes that they enjoy making, as well as sharing with the readers.

  • This book shows many of the recipes that are personal to Sally McKenney, organised in a way that helps the viewer to choose which type of baking they wish to do.
  • This also includes a healthy choices section for those who wish to eat cleaner.

  • By organising the recipes ingredients in this way it is easier for the viewer to quickly glance at the photograph positioned in the corner and understand what they will need.
  • each paragraph also starts with a more prominent weighted font. This way the reader will quickly see the first words while scanning the page for insight. If there are ingredient that they do not want or cannot use, they will be notified quicker by the prominent font.

  • This style of baking book has been made with a series of colours in mind. They are most likely to be related to the recipes themselves, as the layout shows colourful variations, similar to the food shown in the photographs.
  • After looking at different colours used in this type of design, it is possible to determine which colours will work best to appeal to the target audience.
