OUGD601 - Practical research 4 (visual)
Colour palettes
Searching through Pinterest for colour in neutral design revealed several different design examples with similar colour palettes. Soft, flat colours like peach, graphite and navy blue worked well when paired with darker neutral shades, like black and white.
Feminine Design
First looking at feminine use of design in women's skin care and fragrance products, showed that bright colours such as pink and gold were often used. It also showed the bottle or its contents as a focus point of the design, with the text often matching the background colours of the designs.
Products such as these were likely created with the smell of the products in mind. Some would include images of the ingredients, as a way to give the viewer a visual representation of the smell of the contents. These images could also be used to easily communicate the difference in each bottle.
Masculine/Neutral Masculine Design
The design used in masculine fragrances and men's skin care product would often be simplistic and minimal, with limited colours in the colour palettes.
I particularly found the black and white designs interesting as the approaches would be both neutral and masculine. A simple choice of sans serif, bold font would often make the labels noticeably masculine.
One thing that stood out to me, was the way in which white font could be used on its own. By adding a background colour, such as graphite grey or black, the text would remain neutral, simple and effective.
