OUGD601 - Practical Initial Ideas 1

After thinking about what name the brand could be given, I settled on Masc. This was an abbreviation of 'masculine', which would hint at the fact that the neutral design was still aimed at a masculine audiences. Firstly, I started out by searching through different fonts that could be used in the labels. By looking at the feminine and masculine approaches to font, certain elements of each could potentially be used in a way that appeals to everyone.

After further discussions with peers, several fonts had been selected to try out on the labels. In terms of the layout, the label remained minimal for the time being. The fonts that had been chosen were Century Gothic, Futura Medium and Helvetica Neue. These particular fonts were suitable for this design because they had neutral properties and also allowed body text to remain thin. By including thin body text, this could hint at the feminine design approaches used in women's products. Combining this with a bolder heading, would also hint at the masculine approach.

From the feedback I received, one of the main points for my work would be to use either black, white or another neutral background colour. This way, the text in the label and it's colour could better identify each product individually. Starting off these colour designs, I used tints of yellow, red, blue and orange, as they were often found in other skin care products.

In terms of the target audience I began look at the average ages of weightlifters, gym members and the health and fitness industry. By finding this target audience, the development of the design can change according to the audiences preference.
