Studio Brief 2 - Collaborative practice idea generation 2

To continue the idea generation of the project, it was necessary to begin looking at the ways in which our own ideas could be conveyed to the audience. After viewing the Instagram account for Bumble, we came up with the idea to use inspiration quotes as one way to appeal to the student, female demographic. Another idea was to create either simplistic illustrative designs or gifs, that may also include the use of quotes. The inspirational focus could also come from popular female icons that resonate with female students today. By gathering quotes from these people, it would then be possible to attract the interest of the audience and introduce them to the other features that the app offers. The design content is also likely to be relevant to the BFF and BIZZ sections of the app. For example, the quotes used may encourage more females to seek out friendships and support one another. In the same way, the designs may also encourage more females to expand their careers and inspire them to work to success.

After establishing several connecting words to Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz, it was possible to look into different avenues for ideas. This included looking at quotes from different women who inspire today's generation.

Rose McGowan: It's just male dominated society that snows us into not noticing it's we women doing the saving.

Ellen Page: This would be a whole lot better if we just made an effort to be less horrible to on another.

Hellen Keller: I would rather walk with a friend in the dark than on my own in the light.

Simone Biles: Practice creates confidence. Confidence empowers you.

Viola Davis: Do not live someone else life and someone else's idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you. Womanhood is everything that's inside of you.

Malala Yousafzai: If one man can destroy everything, why can't one girl change it?

Serena Williams: The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you're very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind and above all be humble.

Oprah Winfrey: Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher.

Leadership is about empathy. It is about having the ability to relate to and connect with people for the purpose of inspiring and empowering their lives.

If the idea for the project is to use text as the primary imagery for the designs, then it will be necessary to first find the fonts that best match the campaign. To do this, using the website MyFont.com will generate a series of similar fonts to the ones used in Bumble's campaigns.

This is the typeface used by bumble for the company logo. The font is usually different from the body text font used in many of the company's campaigns. This choice of font is likely unique to the brand, as it uses rounded points on the ascenders of the two 'b' letters and the 'l', but also uses flat ended stems on the bottom of the 'm'.

Having searched for the typeface used by Bumble, MyFont.com suggested 5 other fonts with similar characters. As the campaign will focus more on body text, it may not be necessary to use any of these fonts in the designs. The better option would be to look at the similar fonts used in the app as well as the previous campaigns.

Typeface used within the app

From the introductory pages of the app, the body text is changed to a simple sans serif font.

When generated by the website, the best matches would be News Gothic No. 2 Std Bold and regular Bold.

The Super Swipe option within the app is also different in that it is situated in italic style.

When this font was generated by the website, the closest matches would be Clobber Grotesk Bold Italic, Salvo Sans Bold Italic, SmytheSans Oblique Bold and SymthSans Italic Bold.

Typeface used on Bumble Instagram

As the Bumble Instagram uses different typefaces for many of the quote posts, it was best to look at fonts that were similar to the company's own.

When generating the font on the website, the results showed that the most similar were Alright Sans Bold, Kamerik 205 Bold, Kaleko 205 Bold, Kaleko 105 Bold and Swiss 725 Bold.

Additional fonts
When consulting the project partner, more fonts were established as potential fonts to use for the design. These include Verdana and HK Grotesk Bold, which were both similar to fonts used by Bumble throughout their advertisements and campaigns.
