OUGD602 - Summer Freelancers Workshop

Over the summer I attended the Freelancers Workshop provided by the university, in an effort to understand more about life as a freelancer. Here we were able to share ideas about what our career prospects were, the business types we were thinking of starting and how to improve presentation skills. After sharing my idea to potentially go freelance and sell clothing from my brand online, I was given advice about similar businesses and how they began.

One thing that was particularly useful about this workshop was the information given to us about managing finances as a freelancer. This included setting up self employment with the tax office and keeping records of receipts or invoices for the following tax date. As these are requirements of all freelancers, the information led me to think about registering self employed before going freelance in the near future.

At the end of the weekly workshop, we were then required to pitch our own business idea to a set of judges. This also meant that throughout the week we would be practicing presentation techniques and ways to stay focused while explaining the idea. This was particularly beneficial to me, as I had struggled in the past with presenting ideas in detail. By giving a summary of the presentation and revising notes on key points, it became easier to explain the concept and with confidence. This workshop is something I would also consider returning to again this summer, as it may help to revise my presentation abilities before interviews with studios or potential clients in the near future.
