It is 9th November 2023, I am currently living in a flat near my studio in Amsterdam with my girlfriend. I am a graphic designer for a commercial studio based in the city centre, but plan to explore either art direction or open up my own studio with other creatives, as my schedule requires me to work full time and I would prefer days at home. In my spare time I make commissions for individuals and plan to build up a portfolio of work that will be viable with the film industry in the near future.
I have also been taking acting classes as a part time hobby, incase they need someone to fill in on the next James Bond role or if I decide to take up a new career path. The flat we currently live in is decorated with film memorabilia and art work, although we know we should probably invest in some Ikea furniture. In our spare time, we both enjoy going to local beer festivals, gigs and trips to the cinema. And when we can be arsed, we often visit an exhibition or open night of other studios we are in contact with.
Although my schedule is busier than it was in 3rd year of university, I some how find the time to attend the gym several nights a week. Living in Amsterdam also means I have taken up cycling as a way to commute to work but still struggle to speak some of the dutch language. Speaking of university, my cooking has since improved but I am still think chef Ramsey would have other opinions. When I'm not trying to create new recipes, we're likely enjoying the recipes of the city centre restaurants a couple times a month.
The design studio I am working for is paying a handsome £45,000 a year, which means I have been able to save for my family's future and putting my children through school in 5 years time. The rest of my salary is either saved for holidays with friends, who will visit us in Amsterdam every couple months, or saved for weekend trips to other european countries. In the next couple of years we will likely move back to the UK and think about starting a family. The places we are considering are Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds because the rest of our families live near these cities.
If we decide we want to move back to the UK, one thing that may be considered would be to explore lecturing as I have experience with giving lectures to local universities and being involved with the creative community in Amsterdam. However, Brexit is still something to consider in the current climate. We may also plan to get a dog called Rocco if the plan for kids is put off until a few years time.
